How online bingo works

The room, the ticket and the clock — the three things that decide what a session costs and how it feels

Advertising disclosure

This page carries advertising. The “Visit site” buttons are affiliate links: when a reader opens an account through one, the operator pays us a commission. It costs the reader nothing. No operator pays for its position on this site, and none sees a page before it is published: the order follows the regulatory frame and the bingo on offer. How we review, and how we are paid.

The room, not the site

Online bingo is organised in rooms, and the room is the unit that matters. Each one has a format, a ticket price, a schedule, a prize structure and a chat, and the site is mostly a container for them. Two sites running identical software can feel entirely different because one has eleven rooms open at nine in the evening and the other has three.

A room runs on a clock rather than on demand. The lobby shows the next game and a countdown; when it reaches zero the game starts whether or not you are ready, and the room is closed to new tickets. That is the opposite of a slot, which waits for you, and it is the single biggest adjustment for a player coming from casino games. It also means a bingo session has a natural shape — you arrive for a room, you play the games in it, you leave — which is much easier to control than a game that never ends.

The ticket

You buy tickets, not spins. A ticket is a card of numbers, and in a ninety-ball game it has fifteen numbers arranged on three rows of nine. Numbers are called one at a time from the full set and marked off your ticket automatically; when a ticket completes the pattern the game is looking for, that ticket wins.

Most rooms let you buy several tickets for the same game, usually up to a limit, and this is the mechanism that makes bingo cost more than it looks. Six tickets at ten pence is sixty pence a game, not ten. Buying more tickets raises your chance of winning in that game and does not change the house edge, which is set by the proportion of the pot the operator keeps.

Pre-buy lets you buy into games that have not started yet, including games you will not be present for. It is convenient and it is the fastest way to lose track of a budget, because a pre-buy of twenty games is a decision you make once and pay for twenty times.

Auto-daub, and why nobody plays without it

In a bingo hall you mark your own card with a dauber, and missing a number means missing a win. Online, the software marks for you. Auto-daub is on by default on every site we have looked at, so a winning ticket is claimed for you whether or not you are watching.

What that removes is any skill in the game, and it is worth saying plainly: online bingo is pure chance from the moment you buy. The only decisions you make are which room, how many tickets, and when to stop. Anyone selling you a bingo strategy is selling you nothing, and our page on bingo lingo covers the folklore around that.

What auto-daub leaves is the part people come for: watching your ticket fill up, the moment at one-to-go, and the chat. Sites keep a “best ticket” highlighted so you can see how close you are, which is the one piece of interface design in bingo that genuinely matters.

Where the prize comes from

In an ordinary room the prize is the tickets. Everyone buys in, the operator takes a percentage, and the rest is split between the winners in whatever proportion the room sets — in ninety-ball, typically a small share for one line, more for two lines and most for the full house. The operator’s cut is the house edge and it is usually between ten and thirty per cent, which is far more than a slot takes and is the honest reason bingo is cheap entertainment rather than a good bet.

In a guaranteed room the operator promises a minimum prize whether or not enough tickets sell, which makes the room better value when it is quiet and is why guaranteed rooms fill up. In a funded room the operator pays for everything and the tickets are free. In a jackpot room part of the ticket money goes into a pot shared across every site on the network, which is how a small site advertises a seven-figure prize. Our page on bingo networks explains who shares what.

What an hour costs

This is the arithmetic worth doing once. Take the ticket price, multiply by how many tickets you buy, multiply by the number of games the room runs in an hour. A room playing a game every four minutes runs fifteen an hour: at six tickets of ten pence, that is nine pounds. At a penny a ticket it is ninety pence. At fifty pence a ticket with six tickets it is forty-five pounds.

None of those numbers is on the screen while you play, which is the point of working them out first. Then set the figure as a deposit limit in the account menu — every licensed site must offer one — and the room cannot cost more than you decided. Our guide to what a bingo ticket costs runs the sums for the rooms on the sites we track.

Questions readers ask

Is online bingo random?

Yes. Numbers are drawn by a random number generator that is tested by an independent laboratory as a condition of the operator’s licence. eCOGRA tests most of the sites we track. The draw is the same for every player in the room.

Can I improve my chances at bingo?

Only by buying more tickets in a game, which costs proportionally more and does not change the house edge. There is no skill in online bingo once auto-daub is on. Choosing a quieter room improves your chance of winning a given game because fewer tickets are in it, but the prize is usually smaller for the same reason.

What happens if I close the window mid-game?

Nothing bad. Your tickets are registered with the server, auto-daub runs there, and a win is credited whether or not your browser is open. You will miss the chat and the moment, not the money.

How many tickets should I buy?

Whatever makes the hour cost what you decided it should cost. Work backwards from the budget rather than forwards from the ticket price, and set a deposit limit to hold yourself to it.
