30-ball bingo

Nine numbers, one prize, about a minute a game — the fastest thing in a bingo lobby and the one to watch your spending in

Nine numbers

A thirty-ball ticket is three rows of three: nine numbers, no blanks. Thirty numbers are in the draw and the only prize is the full house — all nine. There is no line, no pattern, no second chance. The first ticket to complete takes the pot and the game ends.

Because the draw is small and the ticket is a third of it, games finish fast. Fifteen to twenty calls is typical and a game is over in about sixty seconds, sometimes less.

The speed, and the arithmetic

This is the one format where the pace is the thing to think about before the price. A room running a game a minute gets through sixty games an hour. At six tickets of five pence, that is thirty pence a game and eighteen pounds an hour — from a ticket price that reads as trivially cheap.

Compare it to ninety-ball at the same ticket price: a four-minute cycle, fifteen games an hour, four pounds fifty. The same money per ticket, four times the spend, because the clock is four times faster. The per-game price is the number sites display and the per-hour price is the number that empties an account, and in speed bingo the gap between them is at its widest.

That is not an argument against the format. It is an argument for setting a deposit limit before you open a speed room, which takes thirty seconds in the account menu and is the only control that works at that pace.

When it is the right room

Speed bingo is the format for a short session with a hard stop: ten minutes, ten games, done. It is also the one to use if you want the game without the social side — a minute is not long enough for a conversation, and the chat in speed rooms is mostly scrolling.

It is the wrong room for a long evening, for the same reason. If you want to sit in a room for two hours, ninety-ball costs a quarter as much per hour and gives you something to talk to people about while you do it.

Questions readers ask

How many numbers do I need in 30-ball bingo?

All nine on your ticket. There is no line prize and no pattern: full house only, and the first ticket to complete it ends the game.

How fast is a 30-ball game?

About a minute, sometimes less, usually finishing inside fifteen to twenty calls. A room can run sixty games in an hour.

Why is speed bingo more expensive than it looks?

Because the price you see is per game and the games come four times faster than 90-ball. Six tickets at 5p is 30p a game, which is £18 an hour at a game a minute, against £4.50 for the same tickets in a 90-ball room.

Does 30-ball bingo have jackpots?

Rarely as progressives, because the format is too fast and the pots too small. Where a speed room carries a jackpot it is usually a guaranteed prize at a set hour rather than a rolling one.
