75-ball bingo

The American format: a five-by-five grid, a free square in the middle, and a different pattern every game

No operator pays for its position on this site, and none sees a page before it is published: the order follows the regulatory frame and the bingo on offer. How we review, and how we are paid.

The card

Seventy-five-ball is the American game and the card is a five-by-five grid: twenty-five spaces, twenty-four numbers and a free square in the middle that counts as marked from the start. The columns are banded under the letters B, I, N, G and O — B holds 1 to 15, I holds 16 to 30, N holds 31 to 45 with the free square, G holds 46 to 60 and O holds 61 to 75.

That is where the letters in bingo calls come from. A call of “B-7” tells you which column to look in before you look at the number, which mattered a great deal when people marked their own cards and matters not at all now that the software does it.

The pattern, which changes every game

Ninety-ball always looks for lines and a full card. Seventy-five-ball looks for a shape, and the shape changes from game to game: a letter, a diamond, a cross, four corners, a kite, a postage stamp. The room shows the pattern before the game starts, usually as a small grid beside the card, and the win goes to the first ticket to complete it.

This is the format’s real difference and it is what keeps a long session from feeling the same. It also means you have to look at the pattern before you buy: a four-corners game ends in a dozen calls and a complex pattern can run almost the whole draw, and the two are completely different lengths for the same ticket price.

Coverall, and where the jackpots are

Coverall — also called blackout — needs every number on the card and is the longest game in bingo. It is where the progressive jackpots sit, and the mechanism is always the same: the jackpot pays only if the coverall is completed within a set number of calls, usually somewhere in the high forties or low fifties. Miss that and a consolation prize pays instead, and the jackpot rolls to the next game.

That call limit is the whole jackpot. A coverall inside fifty calls is a genuinely rare event, which is why the prize can be large and why it is seeded rather than built from one room’s tickets. The number of calls is published in the room rules and it is the figure to look at before you decide a jackpot room is worth the higher ticket price.

Against 90-ball

Ninety-ball pays three times from one draw and runs four to six minutes. Seventy-five-ball pays once, on a pattern, and runs anything from a minute to the whole draw depending on the shape. Ninety-ball is the more sociable game because of its length; seventy-five-ball is the more varied one because of the patterns.

For a player new to online bingo, ninety-ball is easier to follow — the prizes are always the same three — and seventy-five-ball is better once you are bored of that. Most of the sites we track run both, and all five of the sites with real bingo rooms run seventy-five-ball.

Questions readers ask

Why is there a free square in the middle?

It is a convention from the American hall game: the centre of the N column counts as marked from the start, which makes patterns through the middle reachable and shortens the game slightly. Every 75-ball card has it.

How do I know which pattern a game is using?

The room shows it before the game starts, as a small grid beside the card. Check it before you buy: a four-corners game is over in a dozen calls and a complex pattern can run most of the draw.

What is coverall bingo?

A game where you need every number on the card. It is the longest format and it is where progressive jackpots sit, usually paying only if the card is completed inside a set number of calls.

Is 75-ball better than 90-ball?

Neither is better. 90-ball pays three prizes from one draw and runs longer, which makes it the sociable game. 75-ball changes its pattern every game, which makes it the varied one. Most sites run both.
